*     Background Information:

The Border Health Meeting has been developed as a mechanism for sharing information on the border health situation and activities along Thailand-Myanmar border area. It is also an opportunity for discussing key issues with an eye to identifying solutions agreeable to all parties.

The first Border Health Meeting, focusing on malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, was held during 11-12 March 2002 in Mae Sot District, Tak Province. The second meeting, focusing on more general health issues in the border areas, was held on 27-28 March 2003 in Ranong Province. The meetings were attended by provincial health officers from all ten provinces along Thailand-Myanmar border, representatives from the central administration of MOPH, NGOs, UN organizations and donors.

In response to conclusions reached at the first meeting, Provincial Health Coordination Meetings in the ten border provinces have been established as a forum for regularly sharing information and discussing health problems among organizations at the provincial level. As a result of the second meeting, a standardized multi-lingual medical records book is now being developed for use in the border area, focused group meetings are being held in the ten Thai-Myanmar border provinces to identify needs for capacity building of the provincial health coordination meeting, and a data technical officer in the Ministry of Public Health Epidemiology has been assigned to data collection on migrants.

To provide a forum for sharing health-related information and discussing common border health issues and seeking appropriate solutions for solving health problems along Thailand-Myanmar border areas, the third Border

Health Meeting is organizing and scheduled for March 2004. The meeting will include a two-day exhibition where organizations can share information about their activities.
