Communicable Disease Surveillance
(CDS) is one of the key areas of work at WHO’s Thailand country office. Our
major partners include several departments of the Ministry of Public Health,
in particular the Department of Disease Control, the Department of Medical
Sciences, and the Department of Medical Services. This area of work focuses
on communicable diseases of public health importance covering surveillance
and responses of endemic, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. We
also work with other ministries, universities and other institutes operating
in this area.
Since the International Health
Regulations (2005) came into force on 15 June 2007, we have taken this tool
as a useful opportunity to support the Ministry of Public Health in
developing its infectious disease surveillance and response system to meet
the IHR requirements.
During the current 2008–2009
biennium, the support to our partners focuses on:
Strengthening collaboration
mechanisms between the public and animal health sectors to promote the
prevention and control of avian influenza and zoonotic diseases of national
importance.
Enhancing personnel capacity in
surveillance and responses to communicable diseases of public health
importance.
Developing and updating tools to
improve prevention, control and management of communicable diseases.
Strengthening networks of public
health laboratories in communicable diseases.
Developing and maintaining
reliable data on incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases or other
communicable diseases of public health importance available through burden
analysis and timely surveillance systems supported by standardised laboratory
networks.
Conducting research on
prevention and control of communicable diseases.
Capacity building for
development of local relevant vaccines.
Assessing and improving national
core capacities required under IHR (2005).
Enhancing capacities of
personnel in response to major epidemics and pandemics.
Strengthening communications to enhance capacities of country
CSR and IHR focal points.
