I am planning on going to Thailand
and would like to know whether it is safe to travel throughout Thailand.
|
|
The WHO is not suggesting any restriction to
travel as a result of the avian influenza outbreak. We suggest that travelers
to Thailand
avoid direct contact with live fowl, poultry product and farms and ensure
that chicken products are thoroughly cooked before eating.
For more information about travel, please consult the WHO travel website http://www.who.int/ith/

Malaria
|
|
There has been no real answer that I have found as to whether or not it is
best to take prophylactic anti-malarial drugs, ie Larium or Chloroquine.
Perhaps you could enlighten me.
|
|
Please
find the following information got from an epidemiologist at the Bureau of
Vector borne Disease.
Please find the IEC card attached
for your information.
What drugs to use??
The Thai national antimalarial
drug policy does not recommend any drug for prophylaxis. Two
main reasons, most of the areas are under influence of multidrug
resistant P .falciparum so no drug is
effective enough to protect any individual from infection. Chloroquine does not work at all, and Mefloquine
(Lariam-TM) resistant parasites are common in
almost all areas. Second reason, risk of getting malaria is not very
high as malaria confined only at the international borders and
forested/mountainous areas and risk of having severe side effects of drugs
might be greater. Therefore, the Thai malaria control programme does not recommend drug prophylaxis for general
population and strongly recommend the use of mosquito protection and early
checking of blood whenever fever appears, see details in the IEC card.
However for short term traveller
who enter a known high transmission area, Doxycycline
100mg/day may be recommended but this drug should not be taken longer than
3-4 weeks. Doxycycline, is not recommended for young children below 8years and
pregnant women.

Please let me know if you have or will have further information on the
announcement for WHO pre proposal submission?
|
|
Starting from the 2004-05 biennium, we have not issued
any announcement for WHO pre-proposal submission since all activities in our
country workplans have been planned with relevant
units/institutions and are being implemented by those units. However, if you
think you have great ideas and that WHO should be able to support your ideas,
you may wish to send in your pre-proposal and we might look into it,
depending on our available resources. You may wish to check details in our
current workplan summary which are also available
on our website. If you have further questions regarding our workplans please contact countryprogramme@searo.who.int
